  • The total economic output of recreational fishing in the US is over $125 billion annually.

  • US anglers and boaters spend over $600 million annually on excise taxes that go towards fisheries conservation and enhancement.

  • US anglers directly invest $1.2 billion annually to preserve, protect and enhance the sport of recreational fishing.

 

  • There are over 31,000 species of fish.

  • There are less than 6,000 species of mammals.

  • The world’s biggest fish is the whale shark (Rhincodon typicus) which can grow to over 20 meters in length, weigh over 34,000 kilograms and live as old as 70 years.

  • Paedocypris progenetica is the world’s smallest fish and only grows to roughly 8 millimetres in length.

  • Bigger specimens of a given species have a smaller gill area to body weight than smaller specimens.  This means that big fish will tend to run out of oxygen faster than smaller fish of a given species.
