Action for Blind People provides practical support and advice, holidays breaks and children's sports clubs to over 22,000 visually impaired people each year.

Action 4 Me - Action for ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Encephalopathy) is aimed at helping the 25,000 children and young people in the UK that suffer from the chronic fatigue illness. It offers information, advice, news and fun features for youngsters with ME who suffer symptoms including exhaustion, painful muscles, headaches and sore throats.

Action for Tinnitus Research is a UK-based tinnitus charity that focuses on funding medical, scientific and social research into tinnitus.

Arts Dyslexia Trust - Promotes understanding of visual-spatial literacy which people, including those labelled dyslexic, learn and develop from. Offers help lines and advice on schools, courses and higher education.

ASPIRE (The Association for Spinal Injury Research) - Its national training centre offers IT courses and computer adaptations enabling people with little or no use of their hands to use computers. Specifically, but not exclusively, for those with spinal cord injury.

Assistive - This website is concerned with the supply of special access technology products for individual needs. On display are switches, controls, computers and other aids for use in education, care and therapy. Assistive particularly specialises in electronic technologies for sensory and motor disabilities and provides products for learning disabilities and communication.

Association of Disabled Professionals - The organisation aims to improve the education, rehabilitation, training and employment opportunities available to disabled people.

Ataxia UK - They support people affected by ataxia with research, information, welfare grants, campaigning and the opportunity to meet and help others in a similar position.

BCS Disability Group - International membership organisation aiming to show employers and public that IT should be a means to equality for disabled people. Work closely with the computer industry to encourage producers of hardware and software to consider accessibility features.

British Association of Dermatologists - Skin disease is a major and disabling problem for many people all over the world. This Website is provided by the British Association of Dermatologists as a source for members of the public searching for reliable information about the skin and skin diseases.

British Association of Spinal Cord Injury Specialists (BASICS) is made up of senior doctors in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Eire. They aim to improve the acute and long-term management of spinal cord injury and the training of doctors in the speciality. The following web site will give you the contact names of the leading consultants in each of the Spinal Injury Units in Britain and Ireland.

British Brain & Spine Foundation aims to improve the prevention, treatment and care of disorders of the brain and spine through research in the clinical neurosciences and education and awareness programmes.

British Computer Association of the Blind - BCAB is a self-help group of visually impaired computer professionals and users and was founded in 1969. The organisation runs a Blind Trainer Certification Scheme (BTCS).

British Council of Disabled People was set up in 1981 by disabled people to promote our full equality and participation in UK society.

British Deaf Association - This site contains the latest information about the British Deaf Association, British Sign Language and the Deaf community. Telephone: 020 7588 3520.

British Sign Language is the preferred language of over 70,000 Deaf people, for whom English may be a second or third language, although over 100,000 hearing people who have a proficiency in the language also use it. British Sign Language is a visual/spatial language, which is governed by its own grammatical rules using hand shapes, hand movements and facial expressions to convey meaning. The grammatical rules of BSL are completely different to the rules of English. Check these resources.

Carers UK is the voice of carers who provide unpaid care by looking after an ill, frail or disabled family member, friend or partner.

Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) occurs when nerves within the spinal cord have been damaged and no longer function properly. This web site is a useful resource for finding out more about CES.

Dyslexia Institute - is an educational charity, founded in 1972, for the assessment and teaching of people with dyslexia and for the training of teachers. It has grown to become the only national dyslexia teaching organisation in the world.

Employers Forum on Disability - The leading UK employers organisation focusing on disability, with several hundred blue-chip members. It was set up to make it easier both to employ disabled people and serve disabled customers.

Employment Opportunities is a national charity helping people with disabilities find and retain work.

Emptech - Database that provides information resources on assistive technologies that are designed to help those with specific disabilities work and study more effectively. The database includes product descriptions, links to manufacturers, suppliers with addresses as well as other related resources.

Epilepsy Research Foundation - The site contains a wealth of information about epilepsy and the Foundation.

European Year of People with Disability central website which promotes it. It has links to all the national sites, including the UK's.

Family Fund provides financial help and information for families with severely disabled children under 16.

Focus on Disability - The site has a wide range of information for disabled people and their carers in the UK.

Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST) works with the Assistive Technology (AT) community to promote useful research and development for disabled and older people. Functional Electrical Stimulation (Salisbury Spinal Injury Unit) - FES is a means of producing contractions in muscles, paralysed due to central nervous system lesions, by means of electrical stimulation. Applications are found in stroke, spinal cord injury, head injury, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. The electrical stimulation is applied either by skin surface electrodes or by implanted electrodes. The department has a number of projects developing its own techniques or assessing devices produced elsewhere. Some of the developments have progressed from research to clinical service. GLADNET (The Global Applied Disability Research and Information Network) brings together research centers, universities, enterprises, government departments, trade unions, and organizations of and for persons with disabilities. Their common goal is to advance competitive employment and training opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Great Ormond Street Children Hospital treats more than 100,000 patients each year - children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions. They receive the best medical care that money can buy, but the NHS funding cannot meet these ever-rising costs, and that's where the hospital's charity, GOSHCC, steps in.

Independent Living Alternatives (ILA) was established in May 1989 to promote the right of disabled people to live independently. ILA is an organisation of disabled people providing a comprehensive range of personal assistance services. Their aim is to enable people who need personal assistance, to be able to live independently in the community and take full control of their lives and thereby have individuality and spontaneity.

Independent Living Funds is a national resource dedicated to the financial support of disabled people to enable them to choose to live in the community rather than in residential care.

INSPIRE Foundation exists to promote research into, and the development of electronic, mechanical and medical aids to assist people with spinal cord paralysis.

LinkAble - This website links together the Personal Web Pages (Home Pages) of PEOPLE who happen to have a disability. 

Matching Houses - holiday house exchange where people with disabilities swap houses with other people who have the same accessibility needs. It’s so simple! So far (in May 2006), they have 438 members in 31 countries from Albania to USA.

MENCAP - Works with people with a learning disability to fight discrimination. Campaigns to ensure hat their rights are recognised.

Mental Help Foundation - Founded in 1949, the Mental Health Foundation is a leading UK charity that provides information, carries out research, campaigns and works to improve services for anyone affected by mental health problems, whatever their age and wherever they live.

Motability - The Motability Scheme was established to provide disabled people with safe, reliable and affordable cars. Cars account for 99% of the Scheme's activities, with powered wheelchairs and scooters making up the balance.

Multiple Sclerosis Society is the UK's largest charity for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) - about 85,000 people in the UK.

Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the only UK charity focussing on all muscular dystrophies and allied disorders.

National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) is the only national charity dedicated to improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this fragile bone disease. In the United Kingdom, one in two women and one in five men will break a bone, mainly because of osteoporosis.

New Mobility Magazine is the Web site for New Mobility Magazine and the leading online resource for Disability Culture and Lifestyle. Quadriplegic & Paraplegic Spinal Cord Injury Support - A support website for people with spinal cord injuries, their careers and family. Queen Elizabeth's Foundation Disability Information Services (DISS) - Provides national disability information that is fully accessible through its database - DissBASE - now containing nearly 10,000 records of support services, products and activities specifically for disabled and elderly people. Up-to-date disability legislation, welfare benefits and relevant organisations are featured.

Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for Disabled People - The Foundation works to equip disabled people with skills to increase their independence, mobility, and help them into employment.

Radiotherapy Damage - Radiotherapy is a very powerful, valuable tool used to treat cancer. Many of the side effects during therapy stages are reversible once treatment has concluded. However, it can also have devastating permanent effects which may only become apparent some months or even years later due to physical damage caused by the radiation. This possibility is often not discussed at the commencement of the treatment, or even envisaged. Treatment may be so urgent, that damage to other organs is almost inevitable. If there is the luxury of time, then shields could be implanted or organs moved aside for the duration of the treatment.

Rooprai Spinal Trust - There is an ever-growing list of therapies and medical breakthroughs aimed at people with spinal injury. Their job at RST is to remain open minded to all that the world has to offer. They simply wish to share information with their supporters and allow them to explore and make up their own minds. The National Autistic Society - The site includes information about autism and Asperger syndrome, and about the support and services available in the UK.

The Nth Degree web site and catalogue is the place where people can come to find information, understanding and solidarity and to share talents, skills and stories. They have lots of "Awarewear" and "Awareware" shirts and stuff for and from Disability Culture, the Inclusion and Independent Living Movements, and for the "Human Connection". The Rowan Organisation is an organisation of disabled people which provides disabled people with access to information, services and resources in order to increase their opportunity for independence and enable them to make informed choices about their future.

The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) website is one of the most comprehensive Spinal Injury sites on the Net.

Vertical Challenge - On 31st July 2005 Brad Zdanivsky became the first quadriplegic ever to reach the summit of the Stawamus Chief in Squamish, British Columbia.
