Spinal Cord Injury Specialists (BASICS) is made up of senior doctors in

Sign Language is the preferred language of over 70,000
Deaf people, for whom English may be a second or
third language, although over 100,000 hearing

British Sign Language is a
visual/spatial language, which is governed by
its own grammatical rules using hand shapes,
hand movements and facial expressions to convey
meaning. The grammatical rules of BSL are
completely different to the rules of English.

(Salisbury Spinal Injury Unit) -
FES
is a means of producing contractions in muscles, paralysed due to central
nervous system lesions, by means of
electrical
stimulation.
Applications are found in
stroke,
spinal cord injury,
head injury,
cerebral palsy
and
multiple
sclerosis.
The
electrical stimulation
is applied either by skin surface electrodes or by implanted electrodes. The
department has a number of projects developing its own
techniques or assessing devices produced elsewhere. Some of the developments

Great Ormond Street Children Hospital
treats more than 100,000 patients each year - children who are suffering from
the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening
conditions. They receive the best medical care that
money can buy, but the NHS funding cannot meet these ever-rising costs, and

Radiotherapy Damage -
Radiotherapy is a very powerful, valuable tool used to treat cancer. Many of the
side effects during therapy stages are reversible once treatment has concluded.
However, it can also have devastating permanent effects which may only become
apparent some months or even years later due to physical damage caused by the
radiation. This possibility is often not discussed at the commencement of the
treatment, or even envisaged. Treatment may be so urgent, that damage to other
organs is almost inevitable. If there is the luxury of time, then shields could
be implanted or organs moved aside for the duration of the treatment.
