Abandonia - This site is full of games that were designed for PC systems and are now abandoned by their makers and most are out of copyright. You can download them for free. Most will run without problems but there are instructions for those that don't.

Amstrad CPC 464 games - The 8-bit Amstrad CPC 464 was a colour personal computer that hit the shelves back in 1984. You can find here same gaming power of the machine.

AOL's Games.com portal revamped - The site now contains over 400 online and downloadable games. Changes to the site include a refreshed interface, in-game advertising and easier navigation, according to AOL. Players can also leave comments and tips for others on the site.

Games Jax - There are loads of sites to go to if you're looking for games, but not many of them deal exclusively with free games. This site only lists those that you don't have to pay for, although the downside of this is that you are bombarded with adverts. There are plenty of good time-wasters here and more are being added every day. The games are rated by users, so you'll know if you're choosing a corker or a damp squib. You'll find retro classics such as Prince of Persia and Sonic the Hedgehog, but some sections, such as the Puzzle category, could do with a lot more choice.

Gamespot - Take a close up look at almost every console, PC and handheld game with detailed reviews, screenshots and gameplay video streams. With many other features such as forums and developer interviews, this is a gamer's heaven.

This game-swapping site lets you trade unwanted titles from your collection for new ones, without paying a penny. Simply provide a list of the games you own and another of the games you want, and Infinite Continues will then match you with people interested in swapping those titles. Once a match has been found, you can agree your swaps and exchange games by post or in person. Game formats listed on the website include the latest Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

iWin.com - Play over 150 games, such as Scrabble, Prime Suspects, Mah Jong Luxor 2, Family Feud, MCF, and many more for free.

Orisinal game developers - Orisinal develops some of the best-looking games on the web. They are characterized by the cute animal graphics that the majority of the games use. There are over 50 titles to choose from, there's enough to keep players busy for a long time.

MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) - Although it requires installation, MAME allows your PC to emulate 1,000s of old arcade games machines. The site doesn't actually contain any games (known as a Roms), but a quick web search will generate a wealth of choice - just download and install MAME program from the site to get started.

Nintendo NES games - The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) have sold more than 60 million units worldwide during its heyday. This 8-bit console was launched in 1983 and its manufacturer encouraged third-party developers to devise some of the most compelling gaming treats of the day.

Novel Games - - The company started out in 2001 from a personal homepage (www.littlepeter.com) of its founder Peter Lee. Later it grew into a company called littlepeter.com. At May 2003 they changed the company name to Novel Games and the web site to www.novelgames.com. Currently (April 2006) they are producing Windows games and Flash games only, but in the future they will expand to produce games for Mac, Linux, Palm, Pocket PC and mobile phones.

Puzzle Games - YoudaGames provides a huge selection of free flash puzzle games to play online.

Smilie Games - A great site for games. Instructions are simple, so you can pick up the games really quickly and simply.
