Queen

2002 The Golden Jubilee year of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II provided a unique opportunity to celebrate a significant achievement of 50 years as Monarch. A major milestone in history - not since Queen Victoria has this occurred.

The Jubilee was celebrated with fun and festivities through the staging of Garden and Street Parties, the lighting of beacons, and the organizing of many other large and small events. It was a day when communities have united and celebrated with feasting, dancing and fireworks.

Hundreds of beacons were lit from the Arctic to the Antarctic, Mount Kenya to Nepal, from the Shetlands to Land’s End, from Australia to Holyhead and throughout the Commonwealth by groups as diverse as Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, heritage organizations, youth groups, local authorities and individuals. Central to this was an Anchor Chain of beacons being lit by the Junior Organization from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors which formed a visible chain from one end of the Country to the other. A sweep of beacons from Scotland and Northern Ireland, through different regions to the Home Counties culminated in The Queen lighting the National Beacon in London at 10.45pm.

City Councils and others were reporting huge celebrations involving thousands of people, incorporating parades, floats, live music, exhibitions and street entertainment. Villages were registering details of events on the village green, fancy dress competitions, teas, fetes and barn dances. There are record-breaking events for the longest street party, It’s A Knockout competitions, flower displays and church services. From the ‘coolest’ street party in the Antarctic to the ‘hottest’ beacon and barbecue in Nairobi, people across the globe have joined in the celebrations.
