27^thMar 07 Croatia Tourist Board on Four Stars for Hotel Marko Polo in Korcula - In latest newsletter of Croatia Tourist Board, renovation of Hotel Marco Polo is also featured. This is what they say: "A well-known Korcula hotel, the Marko Polo, will kick off this season revamped and – as the only hotel on this southern Dalmatian island sporting a four-star category offer.

In the hotel and around it construction work is in full swing that will see a new indoor swimming pool and a series of additional sports & recreation and wellness amenities. With these new additions the hotel will be able to keep its doors open year-round, something its top management believe it has excellent predispositions for, in particular for groups of athletes and sports clubs for whom, in collaboration with the municipal administration, a top-quality sports offer with sports halls and numerous outdoor sports pitches will be secured.

Along with the new sports & recreation and wellness centres, the hotel will also get a new kitchen and a new entrance from the southern side facing the sea. The hotel, whose renovation will be complete at the end of May, is only six hundred metres from the centre of the city of Korcula, there is an expansive pebble beach in the direct vicinity of the hotel and a series of existing sports facilities for tennis, table tennis and mini golf."

1^stFeb 07 Vela Luka Rowing Race, 9 February 2007

Committee members of the British-Croatian Society are the moving spirits behind a remarkable event to take place on 9 February, when a crew from HMS Cornwall will take part in a ‘pulling race’ against the rowing club of Vela Luka on the island of Korčula. The race is one of the events which will take place during the official visit of HMS Cornwall to Split in early February.

The background to this is that in 1933, HMS Ceres, paid an official visit to Vela Luka. The visit lasted from 31 July to 4 August. During this visit, one of the events was a rowing competition between the sailors of the Royal Navy and the rowing club of Vela Luka. The race took place on 2 August over a course of 2380 meters in length starting at about 11am. The boats used seem to have been about 6 metres in length. The ship provided a crew and the club the other.

This event has never been forgotten in Vela Luka and the unusual event of a Royal Navy ship visit to Split planned for 8 – 9 February this year gave rise to the idea of re-enacting the regatta of 1933. The Society’s Boris Marelić and Edward Cowan have worked tirelessly to make this happen and are now about to be rewarded. Edward and Boris will make a presentation to the town of Vela Luka, on on behalf of the Society, of copies of documents relating to the race of 1933. (More about HMS Cornwall here.)
