Vrnik

Vrnik - panorama

Vrnik is a beautiful island of tranquillity (Latitude North 42°55'36" and Longitude East 17°10'30") well known it's deep stone quarries dating back from Roman times. One of the greatest advantages of Vrnik, Korčula and Pelješac area, as tourist resort, is the unspoiled quality and clearness of the sea which surrounds it. The transparency of the sea reaches 21-25 meters.

The currents are also characteristics of this part of Adriatic. The general current, which flows from the West, varies with currents caused by various winds and the tide. It reaches its greatest speed in the Pelješac channel, where it can reach 4 knots. Wave activity has resulted in cliffs in the middle part of the South Korčula coast.

The sea bed around all the island of Korčula favours the development of breeding grounds for fish. There are 74 fishing grounds for small blue fish around the island. Elevations in the form of plateaus and the rocky bottoms are the habitats for many fish. The sea around Korčula and Pelješac also has an outstanding therapeutic quality, which has long been widely used.

There is another great advantage of the Korčulansko-Pelješki canal - WIND. During the year there are various seasonal winds, but in summer the Maestral (NW wind) is extremely popular for WINDSURFING (click on photo below).
